On September 14th, 2019 our very own Poly Bear Pal, Jacob Morris (9), went to New York City to participate in the National Down Syndrome Buddy Walk. Each year, the National Down Syndrome Society (NDSS) creates a video presentation to kick off Down Syndrome Awareness Month the morning before the walk. In a worldwide call for photos for the NDSS video, Jacob’s picture was chosen from over 3,000 applicants. He had the opportunity to fly up to New York City and see his picture displayed in the middle of Times Square up on the big screen. As NDSS puts it, “The video presentation is a reminder of the contributions, accomplishments, and value of people with Down Syndrome.” The video not only highlights Jacob’s accomplishments, but has also inspired many other children and adults, including his Poly classmates, who may be struggling with Down Syndrome or any hardship.
As an underclassman, Jacob is a leader when it comes to participating in something new and different, especially when it might be uneasy to try the unknown. He has lead his classmates to see that something different may lead to your picture being up high in the sky, broadcasted over all over New York City. The National Down Syndrome Walk was just a small step towards Jacob’s bright and successful future of inspiring others and accomplishing the impossible. We love you Jacob!
