The Centre for Science and Technology Studies at Leiden University in the Netherlands recently ranked UC Riverside’s impact in the natural sciences and engineering fields tenth among the top 500 major universities in the world in its annual ranking. The Leiden Ranking is based on the Web of Science bibliographic database produced by Thomson Reuters. The set of bibliometric indicators measures the scientific impact of these universities and their involvement in scientific collaboration. Indicators include the average number of citations of a university’s publication and the frequency of those citations from 2008 through 2011. UCR’s scientific impact in the natural sciences and engineering is ranked ahead of that of prestigious schools such as Princeton, Yale and Caltech. Overall in the sciences, UCR ranked 35th in the world and 29th in North America. UCR also ranked highly among other science fields: 79th in social sciences and humanities, 90th in biomedical and health sciences, 95th in life and earth sciences and 170th in mathematics and computer science.
According to Dallas Rabenstein, Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost: “Our faculty’s scientific impact is truly remarkable, as measured by objective data. I could not be more proud of the research accomplishments of the UCR faculty.”
