Using the Department of Education’s new criteria, Time magazine placed the University of California (UC) Riverside above both UC San Diego and UC Irvine. The new criteria ranks colleges based on graduation rate, tuition and student welfare. These three elements are then compared to determine the cost-effectiveness of the school. Considering that UCR has struggled to aid low-income and first-generation college students, its new position surprised both students and staff. In comparison to UCSD and UCI, two highly distinguished schools, the college has been “beating the odds,” said UCR spokeswoman Kris Lovekin. Armed with its newfound confidence,UCR can take pride in its school.
