BAND: Poly’s band program gives students a chance to bond over the universal language of music.

Mr. Mooring’s band program offers students a chance to hone and display their creative music skills. This elective helps bring students together while providing them with the opportunity to practice something they love: music.
Poly’s band works together as a family; students wishing to join band must be flexible and willing to work with others. “It takes more than one note to create harmony,” Mr. Mooring expressed. Beyond leadership skills, band offers an opportunity to learn more about music while making new friends. Band students help each other develop a better understanding of music. “I chose to be in band because I wanted to learn to play an instrument and be a part of a group where there’s no judgement. It becomes a big, close knit family, and it’s just amazing,” Bianca Vega (9) commented.
Poly’s band performs at events such as Poly at the Plaza and the Veteran’s Day Parade. Throughout the year, several band groups including marching, concert, wind ensemble, pep, and jazz are offered. Marching band begins in early August, and the students practice every day until mid-November. This elective counts as a sport as well, as students exercise while performing. Band students compete in marching competitions throughout Southern California in addition to playing at football games. Pep band also performs in the stands at basketball games.
During the second semester, band students are given the option of joining either concert band or wind ensemble. Concert band is available for freshmen and sophomores, while wind ensemble is only available for juniors and seniors. Students wishing to continue band as a sport may join Poly’s jazz band.
Any students interested in displaying their musical talents and learning how to become better leaders should consider joining this incredible program. “Students with a passion for music, the desire to excel, and the willingness to work hard are more than welcome in my class,” Mr. Mooring stated.
