CONTROVERSIAL: The Supreme Court decides the fate of Roe v. Wade while Americans are divided on the issue.

The Supreme Court is currently considering whether or not to overturn Roe v. Wade. For days both large volumes of people, pro-life and pro-choice have been simultaneously protesting their arguments, and spurring much tension outside of the Supreme Court. As of now it is looking likely that Roe v. Wade will be overturned due to the conservative majority of the court.

For decades, abortion has remained a topic that has been fiercely debated. Recently, America has seen a shift in states increasingly acting on their anti-abortion views, as seen with Texas’s recent complete ban of abortion. The Supreme Court held the opportunity to reverse Roe v. Wade many times before, but the opinion of the court- and the country as a whole- has changed much since then. Past attempts to overturn Roe v. Wade have not been successful, although currently things aren’t looking so great for the future of the law.

President Donald Trump appointed three conservative justices during his term which amplified conservative leverage in the court. Beforehand there was nearly an equal amount of conservative and progressive justices, but with a conservative majority the future of Roe v. Wade falls greater at risk. Outlawing abortion has been a platform of mainstream American conservative politics for quite some time. The court becoming more conservative puts abortion at risk due to the strong opposition there is to abortion in conservatism.

Due to how divided the country is on abortion, The Supreme Court’s final decision on the future of Roe v. Wade  may be what shifts the nation’s opinion further towards one side of the argument. However, it could very easily go the opposite way due to how controversial the subject is. There is a lot of public outcry in favor of abortion that could potentially lead to more mistrust and disdain for the American government if Roe v. Wade ends up being overturned. This may push the Supreme Court towards protecting Roe v. Wade. Either way, the outcome of this decision will alter the landscape of abortion in the United States.
