BATTLE: Halloween and Christmas duke it out for the title of the ‘Ultimate Holiday’.
It isn’t only the season of good tidings that is upon us, but rather the season of debate. The age-old question of Halloween versus Christmas, or spooky versus cheery, continues to be the prime source of discussion. While some hold the witchy revelries of the former as their favored choice, others remain steadfast in their affection for the jolly, snow-capped season of the latter. Let’s have a look at the opinions of Poly’s staff and students, to put the matter to rest and decide once and for all which was the true ‘Ultimate Holiday’.
Amani Anderson (10) proclaims herself as a “horror movie fanatic,” her interests in the genre making Halloween her preferred season. With the release of numerous amazing horror movies during that time of year, she derives much joy from the spookier aspects of the holiday. Alyssa Lopez (10), on the other hand, enjoys Halloween for its fun and creative aspects. With the opportunity to dress up and get into character, she feels more excited and entertained throughout the holiday.
However, Halloween may not be as popular as was previously thought. Armando Mendez (9) argues that Halloween is the opposite of fun, “you’re walking a lot and it’s cold and dark”. He thinks that Christmas, however, is happy. Joseph Lopez believes that “everything about [Christmas] is fun, from putting up your tree to decorating your house and even the food”. For him, the Holiday is a month-long process. Aiden Murcray (10) agrees, he believes that Christmas “can last more than just a day”, and the spirit of the Holiday can last a few days or even weeks and months later. Some simply enjoy the simple pleasures of Christmas. For Lily Cribbins (11), Christmas is “more about family”, and when arguing about Christmas, Dario Gonzalez (9) said it’s better because “you get to open presents”.
In conclusion, Christmas absolutely dominates Halloween, but the debate between the two will always be subjective and a matter of personal preference. While some individuals like the spookiness and festive aspect of Halloween, others will always prefer the cheerful and family-oriented spirit of Christmas. At the end of the day, the choice is yours, between Halloween and Christmas, one of the age-old traditions that never fails to bring about the festive air of the holiday season.
