TRADITIONS: Thanksgiving is generally a time when people reflect on the good things in life.
Thanksgiving has a different meaning to each individual; for one person it’s a happy day of celebrating what individuals are thankful for, while for others it’s a day that reminds them of the deaths of their ancestors. Although the history of the day is quite sinister, now it’s used for other purposes. Mainly, Thanksgiving is used to get together with family and enjoy their company usually with some traditional foods. There seems to always be a need for turkey or ham on Thanksgiving with some sort of gravy, these are just some of the many staple foods of Thanksgiving.
Throughout the year, people are faced with a numerous amount of different challenges that may sway some to have a negative perspective on life. Thanksgiving is a positive way to reflect back on some of the good things that have happened over the year. When asked, students at Poly said that the thing they are most thankful for is their family. Thanksgiving is a wonderful way of reminding a person to tell the people in their life that they are important. Jolena Cerda, a junior here at Poly, replies to the question “Why is Thanksgiving important to you?” Giving a perfect statement to capture the essence of what Thanksgiving is all about, she replies with,“ Thanksgiving is a time where I can get together to appreciate my family, and recognize all the positive things in my life.”
When Poly staff and students were asked what their favorite part about Thanksgiving is, most of their responses included some sort of food. There were a plethora of different answers but the most frequent one was stuffing, which is also a staple food of the day. Although food isn’t a necessity to Thanksgiving it definitely helps with getting people to talk, and hang out over a usually really full stomach. Many different workplaces give off the day for different holidays because they recognize that it is important to have rest, and gather with the people who are important to an individual. Thanksgiving is a really important day in society and should be celebrated by all, so what are you Thankful for this year?
