Poly’s varsity girls’ golf team has wrapped up the season with a League Champion title. They played the five other high schools in the Inland Valley League: Arlington, Rancho Verde, Valley View, John W. North and Canyon Springs. They also competed against Martin Luther King, Murrieta Valley and Temecula Valley high schools in non-league matches for extra practice and good competition.

The team consisted of five seniors, two sophomores and three freshman, but with such a veteran-laden team, the girls will have to adjust next year to the changes to display all their strengths on the course. Kyla Oaks (12) explained how CIF works for golf. “All of the Inland Valley schools [choose] the top four girls from their team to compete for four individual spots,” Kyla Oaks (12) expressed. Holland Shourds (12), Anabella Gurrola (9), Oaks and Kalysta Garland (9) took these spots. These girls competed hard but ultimately failed to advance past the first round. In addition to the individual competition for CIF, there is also a team competition. “The top six from our team, which included the four [who competed in the individual competition], along with Abby Palamores (9) and Christine Dean (12) played collaboratively to achieve the best score,” Oaks stated.

“[Many] girls improved quite a bit, and the younger girls will improve more and more as they continue to play and practice,” Holland Shourds (12) noted about this year. Although the team will lose five seniors next year, they have a promising future ahead with  returners and incoming freshman.
