QUARREL: The Golden Globes “Best Picture” winning film, Bohemian Rhapsody, received a surprisingly negative feedback.

With a 62% Rotten Tomatoes rating, the movie Bohemian Rhapsody, directed by Bryan Singer, certainly experienced its ups and downs. Nevertheless, on January 6, the Golden Globes awarded the movie about Queen the “Best Picture” title of 2018. Although some believe this recognition to be well deserved, others find it misfitting. The movie’s validity as the winner of ¨Best Picture¨ was called into question due to the potentially inaccurate portrayal of Queen that Singer presented to his audience.

As one of the highest-grossing musicals in the United States, there was no doubt that Bohemian Rhapsody would be nominated for “Best Picture.” However, when the movie won over other movies such as A Star Is Born, people were confused as to how it pulled it off. “It’s a shame that such a didactic script and the attachment of Brian Singer taints what could have been a genuine and touching story,¨ Emma Davey, an editorial intern for Bust Magazine, declared. Criticisms for the movie were mostly directed at the overall story, not so at the actors themselves. ¨The film boasts a wonderful lead performance from Rami Malek, but its clichéd narrative and sloppy, safe storytelling let down the larger-than-life figure at its center,” Adam Lubitow, a writer for the Rochester City Newspaper, stated . Winning “Best Picture” at the Golden Globes is an honor and one of the most well respected awards in the film industry; however, due to the response to Bohemian Rhapsody winning, it seems as though the film is lacking in recognition.

Regardless of the negative feedback for Singer’s award winning film, people still found the movie to be a brilliant tribute to Queen. “Bohemian Rhapsody is a fun ride that will put a lump in your throat, a tear in your eye, and more than one terrific song in your heart. Go with it,” Cole Smithey, a writer who reviews recent movies and television shows, said. “This powerful Rhapsody, 10 years in the making, is really more Queen than Freddie — a spectacle of joyful and electrifying rock ‘n’ roll,” Barry Paris from the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, expressed his view by saying. Bohemian Rhapsody had the capability of gleaming positive light and electricity into the audience, and in doing so, it gave viewers the opportunity to reminisce about the old days.

The Golden Globes award for “Best Picture” is not an award given to just any movie. It is awarded based on the emotion of its story and the tale it portrays. The Oscars will be held on February 24, where Bohemian Rhapsody is nominated for five awards. It’s nominations include ¨Best Film Editing,¨ ¨Best Sound Mixing,¨ ¨Best Actor¨ (Rami Malek), ¨Best Sound Editing,¨ and ¨Best Picture.¨As the new year comes around, another page for the film industry turns. Film watchers and reviewers must now wait and see who will be crowned with the next Golden Globes “Best Picture” award.
