EXHILARATING: Poly students share their exciting Spring Break stories.

After working day in and day out since January, Poly High School students gladly welcomed the week-long spring break, lasting from March 31st to April 8th. Some stayed at home and slept in for once, while some went away to another city, another state, or even another country. Here are some different ways in which Poly students took advantage of the freedom presented to them.

Some students simply spent their time hanging out with their friends, like Bobby Fournier (9). He hung out with three of his friends from band, and mostly relaxed, playing card games such as Cards Against Humanity. Towards the end of the break, he went and saw the new Jumanji movie, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, with those same friends.

Lindsey Boucher (11) traveled north to San Francisco for a choir competition. Poly choir performed at the Cubberly Community Center in Palo Alto, then moved on to the Great America theme park, where they later were awarded gold for a 95 point score at the competition. They spent the next day enjoying the sights of San Francisco by visiting Alcatraz, the Exploratorium, Aquarium of the Bay, and Pier 39.

Nicole Tormey (11) spent time at Newport Beach with family and friends in a rented beach house for three days. They visited Balboa Island and the Balboa pier. The day after getting back, she also traveled to San Francisco for her choir trip, a total of four days. As well as sightseeing, Tormey and the rest of Poly’s choir competed in a festival and tied for a gold rating with Woodcrest High School.

Some students traveled out of state, taking full advantage of the free week. Toby Mattison (9), in one such case, traveled to Lake Havasu, Arizona. He and his family took “Sea Doos,” which are similar to jet skis, and rode all the way up the rivers to the dam that holds all the water in Lake Havasu.

Quintin Toma (11), along with his family, took a plane and headed for Hawaii, where he only just recently returned. He landed on the island of Oahu, and stayed down at Waikiki Beach. Despite being stung by a jellyfish on his shoulder while swimming, he continued to enjoy the sights, sounds, and smells that Hawaii offered.

With SAT and AP testing rapidly approaching, students are beginning to forgo weekends to relax for studying. This week was one of the last chances to enjoy time away from the stress of school, before diving back in. In this way, spring break was a chance to forget about upcoming tests and enjoy last bits of freedom before summer.
