DETERMINATION: Like their male counterparts, Poly’s girls’ basketball team prepares for a stellar season.

As many show excitement for Poly’s boys’ team, they should not forget a group of equally important athletes: Girls’ Basketball. While the boys are in the midst of a successful season, the females are also reaching for a California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) title of their own. Through passion and courage, the ladies will dominate the court and defeat their opponents.
It is necessary for the young athletes to form a bond and work as a unit to have a victorious season. “The difference between this year’s team and last year’s is that we’ve come together more as sisters and get along better on and off the court,” Sydney Wright (10), one of the three underclassmen, explained. The team did not have as successful of a season as they had hoped for in 2015. However, this season “will be different because everyone has been a lot more focused on the game and we have new additions [players] this year,” Wright further stated. The girls’ team was reduced to a roster of nine players, as opposed to last year’s roster of twelve. The team is composed of six seniors and three underclassmen.
Veterans will need to lead the team with the experience under their belts. The senior-heavy team knows what to bring to the court and how to pave the road to prosperity. “To reach our goals, I think it’ll take a lot of hard work and determination to be together and work as a team. We want to work towards winning league, and I know it’ll take a lot of dedication to get to that point,” Alexis Lomeli (12), team captain, expressed. The ladies work rigorously by practicing each day of the week for two or more hours while also maintaining their academic lives.
Ladies’ basketball team will work as hard as the boys with fierce attitudes and aggression on the court. Only with their determination can they bring home a title and exemplify what it means to be great Poly bears.
