HORRIFIC: Popular artist Rex Orange County is facing six counts of sexual assault.
Born Alexander O’Connor, more commonly known as Rex Orange County, has been on the rise in popularity since 2017. Many fans were ecstatic about the release of his fourth album, Who Cares? in early 2022. The artist had planned a global tour but postponed it due to “personal circumstances.” Many fans were disappointed but understood his quick decision to cancel until the truth came out. The 24-year-old allegedly attacked a woman twice in London’s West End on June 1st, then four times the following day, including once in a taxi and three times at his Notting Hill home. The woman’s name has not been released to the public, however, it has been reported that she is older than sixteen. O’Connor appeared in court on October 10th and pleaded not guilty. He has been granted unconditional bail and given a trial date of January 3, 2023. A representative has even reported that he is “shocked by the allegations, which he denies, and looks forward to clearing his name in court.”
When the news broke in the middle of October, many fans were appalled and disgusted by the allegations. On social media sites like Twitter and Instagram, there was outrage, which gave fans a chance to express their anger. Many had put the pieces together that this was the reason for the cancellation of his tour and was furious that sexual assault was considered his “personal circumstance.”
At this moment these are just allegations but we must continue to listen to the victim who was able to speak out and tell her story. Now we must wait until more information is revealed in early 2023. Alexander O’Connor was once a beloved musician across the world who we put our trust in and looked up to, but now that may change due to the horrific news we are forced to face.
