EXCEPTIONAL: Brilliance was bestowed upon the Poly Campus by Poly’s very own Jaden Torres (12) and Jordan Dabney (12).

If you’re a student at Riverside Poly High School and decided to go to the pep-rally, rather than the basketball game, at lunch on Friday January 28th, you missed out. A beautiful rivalry was formed earlier this school year between Jaden Torres (12) and Jordan Dabney (12) when they raced in a mile run, ending in a victory for Torres (12). The two seniors decided to continue the rivalry in a one on one pick-up basketball game during lunch on Friday. Needless to say, it was an epic battle.

The game was originally set to be that the first person to seven points would be victorious, but, after almost 30 minutes and many failed attempts, not a single point was scored. This called for a mid-game change from first to seven, to first to three. “The superintendents and all the teachers were coming and supporting” recalls Poly’s Miguel Buan (10). Dabney (12) scored the first point, making the crowd go wild, but his victory was immediately followed by a three-pointer by Torres (12). The crowd swarmed the triumphant Torres, resulting in a friendly dogpile in the middle of the court, with milk and school lunches flying everywhere. “That was definitely the greatest thing that’s happened in Poly High’s entire history,” explains Jerry Vaughn (11). The court was full of cheering and screaming that could be heard throughout the campus. “This is what defines poly pride,” added Carlos Flores (11).

Torres’ and Dabney’s basketball game was a masterpiece blessed onto the Poly campus that united it’s students under a pitiful victory. “That has to be the most disappointing thing the school has ever put on, but I’m beyond proud to go here,” student Jenna Largent (11) adds, between laughs. The game was the talk of the school after lunch ended, making those who did not go wish that they had. The Poly Bears wait in anticipation for the next big sports event these two will battle in.
