COMMITTED: A variety of Poly students participate in Homecoming Spirit Week.

As homecoming rolled around, ASB prepared a variety of events for students to participate in. One of these highly anticipated events was spirit week, where students dressed up each day of the week to match the theme.

The first theme of spirit week was “Disney day.” On this day, many students came to school wearing their favorite Disney ears and attire. Some even decided to go all the way by embodying the disney characters themselves, like Achilles Halcon (12). Halcon wore a Flynn Rider costume. When asked about his feelings regarding himself in the costume, he expressed that he felt “very characteristic.” Halcon was able to capture the essence of Flynn Rider through this attitude.

The next day the theme was “dynamic duo.” Gavin Manely (12) and Katelyn Kennedy (12) paired up as an iconic western duo. Manley explained that their original idea was to go as Bugs Bunny and Lola Bunny,  however, they ultimately decided to settle for the western dynamic. With Manley’s playful cowboy hat and Kennedy’s dainty outfit, the two matched perfectly.

The theme for the third day was “glitz and glamor.” Leo Davis (12), Achilles Halcon (12), Estella (12), and Athena Ghazarian (12) glammed up as a group. Davis wore a tasteful green vest, and Halcon followed in a simple black suit. Gettis and Ghazarian wore contrasting green and red colors, yet seemed very chic while doing it. For the cherry on top, they had a bottle of sparkling cider to share.

The fourth theme of spirit week was “childhood throwback,” where students could reminisce over their childhoods by revisiting the clothing they had once worn. Many brought out their creative sides for this one—such as Nora Best (10) and Jaylee Gutterud (10), whom encapsulated the playfulness of this theme by wearing tutus and bright colored socks. Another participant on this day, Emily Rogers (12),  wore a pair of denim overalls in order to “base [her] outfit off of the overall style.”

Last but not least, the final theme of spirit week— “green out.” Selina Williams (11) wore a green sweater in order to dress for this  theme. She explained that she not only participated in this day, but the other days as well, dressing up to be Dorthy and Scarecrow from The Wizard of Oz for the dynamic duo theme earlier in the week. Jasmine Phillips (12), who also shares this love for spirit week, wore a green shirt on the last day. “I love dressing up,” Phillips said, when asked for her reason as to why she enjoyed spirit week.

Just like Phillips had mentioned, one of the reasons why spirit week was participated in by a multitude of students may have been simply because of the fun aspect of dressing up. However, it can also be believed that spirit week brought an increased sense of community bonding to the school. Collectively participating in themes and events with those around you generates memories and school pride.
