HOOKED: What is it with the world’s obsession with the popular show, Squid Game?
Is it great acting? Compelling scenes? Or is it just really overrated? Well, I binged the entire thing in a day to give my unsolicited opinion. At first I thought it was a pretty interesting concept. The idea of playing children’s games for a sickening amount of money just doesn’t sound like an easy opportunity to pass up. Of course with the twist being that if you are the loser, you will ultimately be eliminated. Honestly, I expected it to be some ordinary, gore-filled, thriller, just based on the looks of it. And yeah, it managed to fit in a ton of gore but also had engaging characters with beautiful acting. The beginning was a little slow for my liking, yet managed to still keep me hooked for more episodes to come. Nevertheless it got more appealing. Episode 6, Gganbu, was when I started getting more and more attached to certain characters. You get to see more of their true colors, and even the heavy truths of their background. Multiple favorite characters are killed off at the end of the episode, leaving only three of the original group. Ultimately, the winner is the main protagonist we’ve been following as an audience the whole time. It felt expected honestly, and that left me really underwhelmed. I just feel like there could have been more of a way to make it less obvious at least. What really did it for me however was the “twist” of who created the game. It just felt all really unnecessary and really made me feel dissatisfied. It didn’t make me dislike the series as a whole, but from a very intriguing story just to have this mediocre twist wasn’t my personal favorite. Answering the question, was it really just overhyped? In my personal opinion, slightly. I did appreciate the story, the small details, and the acting. However, I wouldn’t go raving about it to all my friends that it is a must-see.
