DOMINATION: Eagle’s defensive dominance leads to Chief’s collapse
Super Bowl LIX promised explosive offenses and a potentially record breaking three peat. It delivered quite the opposite. With a chance at history the Kansas City Chiefs imploded. Philadelphia’s defense dominated en route to a final score that made the game appear far closer than it truly was.
The Eagles were led by their superior defensive unit that had the Chiefs reeling. Although he didn’t face a single blitz, Patrick Mahomes was sacked a career high of six times. Mahomes threw for two interceptions in the first half, one of them resulting in a 38 yard pick six by birthday boy, Cooper Dejean. Philadelphia’s defense continued to derail the Chiefs throughout the game, holding them to a scoreless first half. Heading into halftime the Eagles led the Chiefs 24-0. Nothing is more telling of the Eagle’s command than the halftime stats. At half the Eagle’s had a total of 179 total yards while the Chiefs struggled, achieving only 23 total yards. Throughout the entire first half the Chief’s completed only one first down. Heading into halftime the Eagle’s had a clear hold on the game, forcing the Chief’s to dig themselves out of a huge deficit.
As we headed into halftime, Kendrick Lamar took the field, for the famed Super Bowl halftime show. Kendrick brought both SZA and Serena Williams on stage with him Sunday night as special guests. He performed his Grammy award winning song, Not Like Us, with the entire crowd singing along.
The Eagle’s continued to rack up the score throughout the second half. At a certain point the Eagle’s realized the game was over and pulled the majority of the starters. This led to the Chiefs scoring “garbage” downs, undeserving touchdowns at the end of the game. These end of the game touchdowns resulted in a final score that did not reflect the game.
Eagle’s quarterback, Jalen Hurts won Super Bowl MVP, throwing for 122 yards with two touchdowns. At the end of the uneventful game the Eagles put an end to any hopes of a three peat, winning Super Bowl LIV by a final score of 40-22. And that was it for Superbowl LVIII.
