Student safety has increased in most high schools, middle schools, and elementary schools, but have college campuses been forgotten? Last month, a student attending LSU was tragically shot and killed near Southern University’s campus in front of a fraternity house. Security was close enough to hear the gunshot and rush over to the scene.
In the early morning of September 28, 2018 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Wayde Sims, 20, received fatal wounds to the head and unfortunately lost his life.. Sims was known as one of the star players on Louisiana State University’s basketball team. “He was the team jokester, the team prankster. He always had a smile and was bopping around. He got us going in practice,” Coach Will Wade said at a press conference the morning of Sims’ death. Sims was said to be seen in front of a fraternity house near the Southern University’s campus, when what started as a simple argument soon turned into a physical fight. Soon after midnight, a gunshot was heard, and Sims collapsed. Sims was rushed to the hospital where a few hours later he passed due to the injuries he sustained. His team and family continue to mourn the loss of the star player and bright personality once in their. The awareness of safety the death of Sims has brought to our largest academic campuses can only bring hope to improve student safety.
