ARTS: The Riverside School of the Arts has the opportunity to rise to higher levels of success as they compete for a national scholarship.

In a time familiar to budget cuts and downsizing, performing arts and other “nonessential” programs have frequently gotten the short end of the stick. There has certainly been more done to reduce these programs rather than continue and expand upon them with confidence.
That confidence is not completely gone. For Riverside’s youth, the dream to exceed in dance and other arts is far from facing rejection. Luckily, some families with unfortunate financial situations have seen their children’s dreams come true. The Riverside School of the Arts is the solution for many children and teens interested in dance, music and art.
City Councilman Andy Melendrez and the director of the Parks, Recreation and Community Services, Ralph Nuñez, collaborated to start the program. The search for funds and materials to start the program was a tough one, but Melendrez and Nuñez’ persistence led to notable results. Since the program’s beginning in January of last year, the school has grown from a classroom-sized number of students to one of an entire school with over 500 students taking fifteen different classes. The classes take place at the Cesar Chavez Community Center in the Eastside neighborhood.
With expansive growth and success, the school won an entry in the Windermere Real Estate Charity Challenge. To celebrate their twenty-fifth anniversary, Windermere Real Estate is offering a $25,000 reward to six
outstanding programs from across the western United States. The challenge also comes out of the Windermere Foundation’s overall mission to help low-income and homeless families. They have initially chosen 22 YMCA’s, Boys and Girls Clubs and other programs with the same mission as the Riverside School of the Arts to compete for each award by region. As part of the California and Hawaii section, the school has three direct competitors.
Whether the Riverside School of the Arts wins the award or not, the program will continue to grow and offer children opportunities they would otherwise not receive. The school will always receive support from the leaders and members of the Riverside community. It is what makes the city renowned for its innovation and arts.
