GIVING: The holiday season serves as an important reminder to give back to those in need.

By Shelbie Nelson, Staff Writer

With the holiday season in full swing, generosity is in the air. When thinking about the holidays, a warm, decorated home may come to mind, but what about those who do not have a home? After recent fires devastated much of California, many people lost their homes, belongings, and even family members. Due to these destructive fires, many affected families have sought out help through the thousands of organizations across the nation, big and small, that are overwhelmed by supply demands. Organizations such as the American Red Cross and Caring Choices are collecting supplies and offering opportunities for people to volunteer within their communities. Though many may be wishing for the latest piece of technology or hottest fashion items underneath their trees, some wishlists are much simpler. Millions of people are in need of basic needs including food, water, clothing, and household items. Now more than ever, giving in any way possible can help someone in need, greatly.

There are over 10 homeless shelters in Riverside alone and all of them would appreciate any size or type of donation. Most shelters are in need of food donations during the holidays. Think about how much food goes to waste in your home, alone, especially during Thanksgiving. As long as the food item is non-perishable, any shelter will take your generous donation. Some shelters even accept fresh produce. Instead of letting the excess food become waste this season, take it to the nearest shelter.

As cold weather moves in, many are in need of blankets and warm clothing. Donating these items can be simple and virtually free to do. Items like used clothing can be given to shelters even when not in brand-new condition. The same goes for blankets and bedding items: as long as they are clean and in good shape, they will be put to good use.

Although things like food, shelter, and clothing are necessities for those in need, there are many other items to donate that could bring them joy. Especially during the holidays, donating things like toys, games, movies, and books can greatly uplift someone’s spirit. Often, we are given gifts that we may not want or need, and donating these items is a perfect solution.

The holiday season can be tough for those in need, but you have the opportunity to help make it a little bit easier on them. So, before you ask yourself what you want this season, ask yourself what others need.
