The 70th Golden Globes Awards are looming and the Oscar hopefuls are beginning to gain awards momentum leading up to the big night. Among those garnering the most Golden Globe nominations are Steven Spielberg’s biopic Lincoln (7), Quentin Tarantino’s highly anticipated spaghetti western Django Unchained (5) and Ben Affleck’s third directorial outing, hostage movie Argo (5).
Rounding out Best Motion Picture – Drama are Argo, Ang Lee’s Life of Pi, Django Unchained, Lincoln and Kathryn Bigelow’s juggernaut Zero Dark Thirty, which, if the critical response is any indication, will most likely take home the gold. Surprisingly, Paul Thomas Anderson’s The Master and Benh Zeitlin’s Beasts of the Southern Wild were left off the list. Even more surprisingly, Beasts of the Southern Wild newcomer Quvenzhane Wallis was snubbed for a Best Actress nomination, which both critics and moviegoers alike agreed she earned.
Where The Master came up short in the Best Picture category, it made up for it in the acting categories. Joaquin Phoenix, Phillip Seymour Hoffman and Amy Adams received nominations for Best Performance By An Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama, Best Performance By An Actor in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture and Best Performance By An Actress in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture, respectively. Joining Joaquin Phoenix in the Best Actor category is Daniel Day-Lewis for Lincoln, Richard Gere for Arbitrage, John Hawkes for The Sessions and Denzel Washington for Flight. Unlike most of the other categories, Best Actor is pretty much up for grabs. Every performance from Richard Gere’s self-obsessed hedge fund magnate out to save his skins at any cost to John Hawkes’ sex-depraved iron-lung patient on a quest to lose his virginity to Denzel Washington’s alcoholic, drug addict airline pilot is more than deserving of the honor.
In the not-so-equivalent Best Motion Picture – Comedy or Musical category, the nominees were The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, Les Miserables, Moonrise Kingdom, Salmon Fishing in Yemen and Silver Linings Playbook. In an unexpected turn, David O. Russell’s latest film Silver Linings Playbook did not make the cut for the Drama category, which is odd considering the amount of attention it has been getting from smaller movie award syndicates like the Satellite Awards and the Detroit Film Critics Society. Another surprise is the presence of Salmon Fishing in Yemen starring Ewan McGregor and Emily Blunt, a film that was passively received by both critics and moviegoers. Some have even began to compare it to last year’s appalling The Tourist that received a Best Picture nomination and nominations for its two leads Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp.
On the TV front, Showtime’s Homeland and HBO’s Girls dominated in the drama and comedy categories respectively. Claire Danes and Damian Lewis of Homeland act as the frontrunners in their respective categories while, for the first time in years, Bryan Cranston, Jon Hamm and Steve Bescemi are the underdogs. The biggest surprise in the television section is the absence of Mad Men from the Best Television Series category, something that has not occurred since the show’s beginning in 2007.
The 70th Annual Golden Globe Awards will more than likely lead the way for one lucky film as the year’s Oscar hopefuls make their run through the award circuit. Catch the Golden Globes Sunday, January 13, 2013 at 5 p.m. Pacific Time on NBC, hosted by comedians Tina Fey and Amy Poehler.
