On November 7, Poly girls’ volleyball played their last league game against North. The game was hard fought, as the team knew that beating North would not be easy. The game began with a struggling defense on Poly’s side. Lack of communication and mental mistakes began to take a toll on the girls. Down two sets, the girls made an astonishing three-set comeback. By the third set, the Bears had made adjustments, putting in a new outside hitter and libero. With newfound confidence and control, the team then began to pressure their opponents by playing strong offensively and, in the process, turned the tide of the game.
The game pushed the team to play their best. “Everybody did their part and more. We didn’t let anything hit the floor, and we executed on our side, ” Co-Captain Charlotte Havrisik (11) expressed.
Having lost many senior starters, girls’ volleyball faced a number of challenges during their season. But despite a rough start, the girls made up for their shortcomings and are now poised to go far in CIF. “With a lot of practice and reevaluating ourselves, we have grown to be a strong and self-disciplined team,” varsity player Elena Vasquez (11) said. Poly was knocked out of the second round at CIF last year and the team hopes to go further this year.
For the girls, Friday’s victory was only the beginning. “We keep our heads up and keep pushing; we are going to do great things in CIF,” Co-Captain Rowan Jack (11) reassured. As indicated by Friday’s game, Poly girls’ volleyball has turned a new leaf and are ready to prove themselves this year.
