On top of having to get ready for upcoming semester finals, the girls of Poly soccer are faced with another challenge this winter: practicing and preparing for their upcoming season. Poly girls’ soccer is currently in preseason and will begin their season this January.

The girls are training hard to get ready for their upcoming games. They have learned new defensive tactics, ranging from one-on-one defense to team defending as a whole. Once the team has the defensive drill down, they begin building offensively. “We are proud of the way the team is progressing, but both us coaches and the players know there is plenty more work to do,” varsity coach Katherine Rumfola stated.

At the beginning of the year, the team was required to write down what their goals would be for the season. “Overall, our ultimate goal is to win league and CIF this year,” varsity girls’ soccer captain Peyton Hays (12) remarked.

They are constantly striving to achieve these goals and must work their hardest to complete them. The girls must be alert and stay on top of things in order to balance and meet their athletic and academic benchmarks. “We demand a constant high work ethic during all training sessions. Along with that, we expect them to stay organized and disciplined,” Rumfola said.

The girls are excited to start this year’s season. They have been putting all of their effort into their work, with the goal of succeeding always in mind. “I believe I’ll play well this season and even better with the support of my team, but overall I can’t wait for season to start,” Nicole Tormey (9) expressed. “These girls are determined and are learning more and more every day. This team is excited and ready for this year,” Rumfola added.

So far in the preseason, varsity has played a total of three games. In their first game they tied Vista Murrieta at 1–1, followed by a loss to South Torrance 0–1 and a win against Citrus Valley 3–0. The varsity team’s first game of the season will be January 12.
