BITTERSWEET: Seniors on the Poly Girls Lacrosse team are asked to deliver their feelings after a moving Senior Night ceremony and well-deserved 7-5 victory.
At the Poly Girls Lacrosse Senior Night, there is a mixture of many feelings in the air. Seniors walk through a tent made of lacrosse rackets and must say their goodbyes, receiving flowers and balloons and an assortment of gifts. Shortly after the ceremony, the girls jump into their game, to win a close but satisfying varsity game on their home field. After the memorable night, seniors are asked about their emotions and ambitions.
Mckenna Diekmann and Sophia Best have both played key roles in Poly Girls Lacrosse as captains. Deikmann, who has starred as midfielder on the field for the past four years, is admittedly “sad that it is ending,” but she states that she “might be back around again” to help out the team. Best has three years of experience as attack, and she knows for sure that she wants to “come back to help coach,” so her job on the field is not completely over.
Ranya Butrus joined the lacrosse team during the summer break of her junior year, and plays attack. Although she was only able to play her senior year, Butrus stated that “everyone was welcoming” and she was still able to “have so much fun.” Butrus believes it is important to know that “everyone starts somewhere, so it is never too late to start now.” Zoe Harris also agrees with Butrus, in which she thinks that if there is something you want to do, you should “just do it.” Harris has been playing for two years. For her, the lacrosse season coming to an end is definitely a “little bit of a bittersweet ending.” However, she vocalizes that she was able to make “many great connections” and have a “good senior season.”
Allie Laine, who has played as attack for the past two years is “super excited” to leave high school but also “sad” to leave the team. She compares everyone on the team to “sisters,” and that it feels like the bond between the girls “feels like family.”
Coach Mingee is undoubtedly the proudest person of the seniors on the team, and strongly believes that the girls have “come really far these months.” She states that the “season has been like no other.” Coach Mingee is sad to say farewell, but also excited for where their futures lead them.
Whatever opportunities are held in front of you, just know that the team is proud of you. Best wishes for your journey ahead, seniors!
