DETERMINATED: Poly Girls’ Golf Team shares their goal-driven thoughts about the upcoming 2022 season.
As fall approaches, student athletes start to take action. There are a variety of athletic programs offered at Riverside Polytechnic High School (Poly), many of which are highly competitive within the district. A very reputable example is the girls’ golf team—being undefeated in league so far, they embody the reason why sports can be so rewarding.
A few of the girls on the team already have goals in mind for this season. Abbie Griggs (12), for instance, is “looking forward to doing better at tournaments and just overall in matches.” She also wants to “improve on [her] putting and distance control with [her] clubs.” Griggs was introduced to the world of golf four years ago, when her father and brother brought it up. Since then, she found a certain passion within the sport. Sophia Soto (12), explains how she has faith that the girls will “make team CIF and break their [past records].” Soto began golfing casually at 8 years old, but didn’t think much about it at the time. It was not until the end of her sophomore year at Poly that Soto started to come to practice everyday, eventually becoming team captain and an important role model for others. For her own personal goal, Soto states that she would like to “make first team for league [this year, as she] made second [team] last year.
The girls aren’t the only ones that are coming into this season with high ambitions. Coach Eric Chavez, who was offered the opportunity to start coaching for the golf team last year, has many aspirations for the girls. He states, “[We have] undefeated girls so far, so hopefully [we] can finish the season undefeated.” He also wants for the girls to do well in CIFs, and for the individual golfers to advance far.
Our Poly Girls’ Golf team is amazingly capable. Whatever happens, girls— we know you will do great things. Keep on swinging!
