The tweet heard ‘round the world (or at least the Boy Meets World world) has confirmed some very exciting news. Ben Savage, formerly known as Cory Matthews on the ’90s sitcom Boy Meets World, recently tweeted, “I’m going to be a father. Well, on TV at least,” confirming that the BMW sequel/spin-off is officially on. Danielle Fishel, Corey’s on-screen ladylove, also confirmed on her Tumblr—a must-read post itself—that this project is going to happen.

For those of you who aren’t familiar with the show, it was a coming-of-age sitcom that followed Cory Matthews’ life in Philadelphia from youth to marriage, detailing his trials and tribulations with love, heartbreak, high school, college and all the glorious themes of a ’90s sitcom. From 1993 to 2000, fans watched Cory and Topanga, as well as Cory’s brother Eric (Will Friedle) and his best friend Shawn Hunter (Rider Strong), grow up through grade school, high school and college, with the wise and beloved Mr. George Feeny (William Daniels) as their teacher and mentor.

So, what could possibly be in store for Boy Meets World 2.0? Cory and Topanga will come back as mom and dad to a girl, but that is pretty much all that fans know about the rebooted show as of now.

As exciting as this news is, there are some worrying aspects about it. The reboot is going to be on Disney Channel, which may or may not mean someone is going to sing (think about it, you can’t name a Disney Channel star that hasn’t had a singing career). Can the new show possess the same ’90s innocence and charm that the original did? Shows these days seem to stoop down to idiotic levels to get a laugh out of the audience, using crude humor and subtle sexual references to stay modern and cool. Shows like BMW, however, dealt with real teenage problems, with every episode teaching a lesson and accentuated with effortless humor.

On her blog, Fishel said: “GMW is a new show. It isn’t BMW brought back to life but in current day. It will have familiar faces, familiar themes and familiar messages. It will also have new faces, new themes, and new messages.” Fans can only hope this is true and GMW doesn’t fall into the trap of becoming an unintelligent comedy like iCarly (Nickelodeon) or a showcase of singing “talent” like Shake it Up (Disney Channel).

So, what familiar faces will we see? More importantly, will Mr. Feeny still be teaching? As of now, Savage and Fishel are the only confirmed actors returning. In a statement, Rider Strong said: “At this point, I have no official involvement in Girl Meets World. There might be a chance to see some of the BMW cast in a guest spot, and I think it would be nice to find out where our characters have been all these years. But Girl Meets World will be, and I think it should be, its own show. It will be about Cory and Topanga, their daughter, and a new set of characters.” According to Entertainment Weekly, Will Friedle and William Daniels have not yet commented on whether they will return to the show, which could mean anything.

From the little information we’ve heard about Girl Meets World, it seems the show will be brand-new, and not a made-over Boy Meets World, but nonetheless exciting. The commentary from Danielle Fishel gives me high hope for a new show with the same basic values of BMW. Skeptics and optimists alike will just have to wait and see how and when this girl will meet the world.
