Poly attended the National High School Ethics Bowl (NHSEB) Regional Competition on February 2 at Chapman University. Although the team did not place in the competition, they did come home with a Judges Engagement Trophy, awarded for their responses to questions proposed by judges. The team was composed of: Brandon Byrne (12), Kaelah Wilson (12), Matt Duffy (11), Cameron Brewer (11), Jesse Brady (12), Kathleen Lynch (10), Samantha Andrews (12), and Roque Lopez (9).

The team was not victorious, but they still valued the overall experience. Team member Kaelah Wilson (12) claims it showed her the power of intelligent conversation to bring rise to new solutions. “It’s truly been a transformative experience and I think everyone on the team has learned the importance of open mindedness.” An essential component of the event was to put aside all personal biases and beliefs to spark possible solutions to the dilemmas. She says, “After we started talking and building off of each other’s ideas that we had already practiced, I was really proud of what we accomplished.” The ethics bowl team prepared all they could and gave it their best, hopefully coming back even stronger next year.
