Like many shows these days, Elementary is an American remake of a show originally done in the U.K. But unlike many prior attempts at this (*cough* Skins *cough*), this show is not too bad.
This CBS take on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes assumes a very modern spin on the old story. It follows recently recovered drug addict Sherlock Holmes (Johnny Lee Miller) who, after release from rehab, begins to help solve crimes in New York. To help him through his recovery, former surgeon Dr. Watson (Lucy Liu) moves in with him and follows him along in his first criminal case since rehab.
One of the shows biggest weaknesses lies in the fact that Watson, Holmes’ traditionally male sidekick, is played by a woman, and though it is a unique change to the classic story, the lack of chemistry between Miller and Liu made it hard to enjoy the show. That’s not to say, however, that the lack of chemistry is unintentional; romantic interest between the two would contradict the nature of the Holmes-Watson relationship.
The show is worth watching whether or not viewers are familiar with Sherlock Holmes. It has the action of a Law and Order episode, and Holmes has the wit, intelligence and even arrogance similar to that of Dr. Gregory House.
Overall, Elementary seems to have some promise in the Sherlock Holmes canon, which doesn’t seem to be going out of style anytime soon.
You can catch the show, now on its third episode, Thursdays at 10:00 p.m. on CBS.
