Do you remember looking through the list of Poly’s clubs for the first time your freshman year? Perhaps you remember your excitement as you walked down aisles and aisles of tables and chaos during Club Rush. Former president of her medical club at her previous high school, Du-A Lee (11) was shocked to notice that a medical club was not among those tables. “I asked myself, ‘Why don’t I start one here at Poly?'” Lee said. With the help of her brother Du-O Lee (10) and advisor Chong Choe, Lee founded Poly’s first Medical Club, which meets every other Tuesday in room 506.
Lee and her family moved to Riverside from Omaha, Nebraska, in the beginning of July. Prior to the move, her family came to scope out the city and neighborhood. Lee was apprehensive of the big move but was also looking forward to a year filled with new people, numerous AP courses and many changes. “Moving to a new state halfway across the country was a big change, but I’m learning to adjust to my environment,” Lee said.
Medical Club has made a huge first impression on Poly’s campus. Around 50 students attended the first meeting. Lee did not expect such a turnout; only half of the students in attendance formally signed up for the club during Club Rush. Nevertheless, she was very excited and ready to start leading the club. “Everyone seemed so enthusiastic,” she gushed.
According to Lee, Medical Club encourages students interested in the medical field to pursue a career in it. “We are going to explore various medical careers while having the opportunity to be involved in activities that promote medical community service,” Lee explained, “I want to explore the medical field as much as I can so that I may pursue it as my career.” She plans to bring speakers to the club to talk about
their medical profession and help Poly ASB with the annual blood drive. Ultimately, she wants the club to help raise awareness of health issues in the world.
In a month, Lee will begin volunteer work for the Riverside County Regional Medical Center. She wishes to pursue a career in the medical field and fulfill her lifelong dream of becoming a pediatrician. For now, she keeps busy with leading Poly’s Medical Club and improving it throughout her remaining two years of high school.
