Google is selecting new designs for its logo through its annual competition, Doodle 4 Google, held from the beginning of February through the end of March for K-12 students. The student who exhibits the greatest artistic ability and talent is chosen as the winner and his or her artwork is used as Google’s homepage logo. The millions of people who use computers daily will be able to see the student’s work.
Different themes for the art are chosen each year. This year the theme is “My Best Day Ever…” The students are encouraged to exercise their imaginations to create artwork relevant to the theme.
One student will be chosen to have his or her art featured on Google’s homepage. He or she will also receive “a $30,000 college scholarship and a $50,000 technology grant for his or her school along with some other cool prizes,” Google.com reported.
The judging of the artwork is based on many factors: artistic merit, creativity and theme communication. The grade and artistic skill of the student must be taken into account. The creativity portion is based on the representation of the theme and Google logo. Lastly, the theme must be expressed throughout the artwork and the art must include a supporting statement.
“250 doodles from across the country will be chosen by a panel of Google employees based on which doodles they feel best represent the theme. In each state, one doodle will be selected in each grade group, meaning that each state will be equally represented,” Google.com stated. There are five national finalists and one national winner by the end of the competition.
