ADDITION: Poly’s girls’ soccer program adds a “frosh” team this year.

This year, there will be a new addition to Poly’s soccer program. Along with a junior varsity and varsity team, there will now be a girls’ “frosh” (freshman and sophomore) team. This addition is part of a campus-wide movement to increase participation in school activities. “This was a great way to get another 15 girls involved in school activities,” said Poly Athletic Director, Mr. Jim Vaughn.

The formation of the team is still a work in progress. When asked who would coach the team, Vaughn responded, “We do not have someone set yet but we have a couple people we are trying to get set.” Another challenge for the athletic department will be finding other frosh teams to compete against. Arlington and North are the only other high schools with frosh teams in the Inland Valley League according to Vaughn.

In past years, many girls did not make the soccer team at Poly, due to the limited spots on the team, and had no way to develop their skills. “I think it’s a good idea to have a frosh team, because it gives more players the chance to experience playing high school soccer,” expressed Joanna Fernandez (9).

Having a frosh team could ease the pressure on the freshmen who are trying out for the first time. In past years, freshmen and sophomores had to compete against juniors and seniors for junior varsity and varsity positions. Hopefully the creation of a frosh team this year will mold confident, talented players for years to come.
