EDUCATION: Comedy Sports performers step on stage.
By Kate Weggeland, Staff Writer
Poly High School’s comedy sports performed in front of classes during the week of June 3.
Comedy Sports is an improvisation team at Poly. Comedy Sports performs acts similar to the hit TV show “Who’s Line is it Anyway.” The improvisation team is part of an official organization called the Comedy Sports High School League. There is a professional Comedy Sports located in Los Angeles.
Once a month, Poly High School welcomes a coach onto campus who helps the students work on different improvisation strategies and techniques for specific games. The students hone their improvisation skills for matches against Comedy Sports teams from other schools throughout the year.
Two years ago, Poly High School competed in Gamecon, which is a tournament that hosts teams from all over the Southern California region. One of the largest Comedy Sports programs in the Riverside Unified School District is at King High School. This year,
Poly competed against King High School and Citrus Valley High School. A teachers vs. students game was also held.
2013 marked the first official year that Poly High School was part of the official Comedy Sports High School league. Next year, the program is expected to grow.
“Comedy Sports is a great way for high school students to step our of their comfort zones and be funny. Even if someone begins on the team not very comfortable in front of a large crowd, they always end the year having made great improvements. This ‘sport’ really has a lot to offer!” Caitlyn McCain (10) said.
