The Poly boys’ water polo team defeated Flintridge Prep 17-9 in its quarterfinal match-up at Sippy Woodhead Pool. Robert Bentley’s (12) impressive 11 goals (two or three goals might be considered the average number) provided the bulk of the scoring for the team. Throughout the game, Bentley unleashed an endless barrage of shots at which the opposing goalie could only hopelessly gaze as they whizzed past him. He was particularly adept at executing the high-arching rainbow shot that drifted just past the goalie’s outstretched arms, using this move to his advantage four times. During timeouts, the opposing coach would berate his team, “Why can’t we stop that number six [Bentley’s number]?”
Other players pitched in as well. Jonah Saenz (10) contributed two goals, including a deft maneuver in which he reached out and scooped the ball over the goalie’s head before punching it in for the score. Bradley Tormey (11) and Zack Ritter (9) both capitalized on fourth quarter penalty shot opportunities with goals of their own.
On the defensive end, goalie Kristopher McVeigh (9) made several impressive saves during the second half of the game, including a clutch third quarter save on a penalty shot.
After Flintridge Prep scored the first goal of the game, Poly recovered quickly with several goals of its own and never really looked back en route to a relatively comfortable margin of victory.
The team’s next game will be its semifinal matchup against Glendale, the top ranked team in its division, on Wednesday, November 14 at 7:30 p.m. at Mt. Sac.
