Young adult novels fill the dusty shelves of libraries across America, but these books’ covers boast the names of adult authors who feebly attempt to pull inspiration from their twentieth-century days of adolescence. The morals of their stories, while valid, have trouble reaching the consciences of today’s youth.
What better time to write a young adult novel than when you are a young adult? Why not capture these hilarious and heartfelt moments as they happen?
Zoe Harness (12) does just that as she relives her most meaningful teenage experiences through her novel Teen Wisdom and Other Oxymorons. While Harness has three books to her name, Teen Wisdom is the first to be widely published.
Twenty-seven vignettes comprise the novel, all based on actual events. Specific happenings in Harness’s life inspire each short story, namely her experiences from her journeys to all fifty states. During all of her travels she kept a journal which served as her primary source during the writing process. “I wrote about the people and the places I’ve seen. They have all made huge impacts on my life,” Harness said.
However, Harness does not merely want to lay out her experiences in writing. When people read her book, she hopes that they realize the importance of the events—however small—in their own lives. “When people read it I want them to say, ‘I have a story to tell, too,’” Harness said.
Harness’s vignettes take readers on an emotional journey. One page leaves the reader’s stomach aching from laughter, while the next causes the reader to stain his or her
electronic tablet with tears. This emotional roller-coaster relates to teens everywhere, which attributes to the book’s success. Mothers and teens alike adore the novel; positive reviews flood Harness’s website.
Some teens would let all this excitement and success get to their heads, but Harness’s humility is just as impressive as her writing skills. She donates all of the proceeds from the book to Operation Safehouse, a charity that opens its doors to troubled teens in need of a refuge.
Harness admits she lives a charmed life: “Everyone has a story. Mine just happens to be a happy one.”
Even though she leads a joyful life, Harness still goes through the trials and tribulations all teens must face, which becomes clear throughout the novel. But the morals she takes from each of these trials convince readers that “teen wisdom” may not be an oxymoron after all.
