SPORTS: Poly’s Boys Lacrosse Team is coming together each practice and game to grow and work towards their goals of reaching the CIF playoffs.
Among many of the sports that students are able to participate in during the spring season, Boys Lacrosse doesn’t get the attention it deserves. Twenty-two players and two coaches are hard at work aiming towards reaching new heights and goals individually and as a team throughout this season. Considering it is a relatively newer sport to Poly and not many athletes have experience walking in, the coaches have made it their mission to help the team get better and improve every day.

Although the 2025 lacrosse season so far has been a rougher one than the boys’ team would like, they are pushing through and improving every day. Junior Lawson Brown, who plays Attack is one of the four captains and commented how there are a lot of new players on the team but how “[they]’re doing pretty good considering.” The team currently is at a 4-5 win-loss record, with 3-2 in league, standing at third place. CIF (California Interscholastic Foundation) games don’t start until mid April, so they still have a few more games to keep getting better before then. Captain Ryan Muchaney (11), Guard, explained what the season has been like and the amount “of ups and downs” they’ve experienced, but he’s grateful for “[how] [they]’re finally finding [them]selves and getting better as a team.”

When asked about goals the coaches set for the team, all four captains talked about looking to improve and get better every day. Junior Jonathon Guerra, one of the captains and Defensive Long Stick Midfielders, was talking about his goals for this season and emphasized how he’s looking to “help [his] teammates that are developing in the process [and] that are new to the sport.” Lacrosse actually happens to be the oldest sport in North America, but has only recently become one that students at Poly can join and participate in. Whether the athletes are in their fourth year on the team, or just joined as Freshmen, Senior Attack Man Hayden Miller explained that the coaches have really pushed them all to “be cooperative, [and] being a team player” because they are all in this together.
When asked about this year’s team, Assistant Coach, Coach Mushaney, talked very highly of all the athletes. He described them collectively as “just [a] fun and happy” team because “that’s what this group is.” They’ve continued to work hard and push themselves towards the goals they’ve set for themselves as individuals, but also the goals that the coaches are pushing them to reach. This is Coach Mushaney’s first year as a coach, but he is looking to improve alongside the athletes each year and get better every day.
Wish the Boys’ Lacrosse team good luck and come out to support them at their next home games on March 31st, April 17th, and April 21st! Go Bears!
