This year, homecoming will be a celebration of our beloved Saturday morning cartoons. Titled “Animation Nation,” ASB has busily organized our homecoming events from the carefully-taped posters on the brick walls to the eardrum-bursting homecoming assembly. As the students of Poly High School lined the bleachers of the gym, many were impressed by the intricate details of the assembly.

“I was impressed by how well ASB was able to show the Homecoming theme with the videos, ‘commercial breaks’ and the remote.” Jordan Tick (11) said. Poly’s ASB worked hard to deliver this year, making creative powerpoints and putting up their signature posters. By organizing the assembly in an exciting way, ASB members brought the pep that was desired.

“I was impressed by all the lights that were set up! It made it much more exciting! I think it was the best assembly that Poly’s had in years!” Shah Modiri (11) commented. It’s evident that ASB has been working diligently, but how do they prepare all this with the short time that they have?

The process is lengthy, requiring months of preparation that starts before the school year even begins.

“[Homecoming] themes are chosen during the summer, and we [ASB] have a two-day retreat that we attend. [On] the second day [of the retreat], we discuss themes and vote on the overall theme,” Kieran McVeigh (12) explained. “We wanted a fun-filled theme, something we could all look back on and say ‘Hey, Animation Nation was the best homecoming Poly has ever put on,’”

With Homecoming being the first big event of the year, there is certainly a surplus of anticipation to measure up to. The excitement is nerve-wracking to many. According to Micaela Arias (11) , Commissioner of Fine Arts, it is not the high-tech assembly or organizing the dance that is the biggest worry.

“The most stressful part is probably the float-building because our class is so big; it tends to get hard to coordinate everything. We always wind up pulling it together though, because our class is just that awesome.” Arias said.

Despite the plethora of responsibilities, many ASB members still enjoy preparing for Homecoming all the same.

“[It’s] the atmosphere. Everyone is just so excited and full of energy. Homecoming is a time where Poly really comes together and shows its school spirit,” Arias said.
