A Tech Savvy Valentine’s Day on a Dime

Feb 10, 2016

LOVE: Here’s how to show your special someone how much you care this Valentine’s Day without breaking the bank.

By Lily Mitchell, Staff Writer

As high schoolers, our lives are not usually characterized by stacks of cash, especially after Christmas cleans out our bank accounts.  So when February 14 rolls around, our hearts are often bigger than our wallets.  Have no fear, they don’t have to be.  Here are some of the most budget-friendly and simple ways to treat the one you really care about.

  1. Apps:  Do you happen to have “your song” that you share together?  Hit up the app store of your device and download “Triller” for free.  With Triller, you can make your own music video to the song of your choice.  To get creative, lip sync, artfully arrange your backdrop, and throw in some dance moves. Triller allows you to compile as many takes as you want with tons of different colored filters so you can channel your inner director and capture (or recapture) your sweetie’s heart.  Couple the video with some beautiful flowers or small gift, and you’re set.  Bonus:  If you are a talented singer and/or musician, download “Acapella” (free as well) where you can perform “your song” yourself for an even more heartfelt, personal touch.  Acapella allows you to record each part of a song and layer them to make a special rendition unique to you.
  2. A Post on Social Media:  This one may seem obvious, but it is surprisingly overlooked and actually perfect for those who are in a long-distance relationship and may not be able to see each other on Valentine’s Day.  If done right, straightforwardly expressing your feelings in a caption below a cute collage of pictures or “Flipagram” video can be quite the proclamation of love in today’s increasingly virtual world.  However, it is strongly recommended that when incorporating this into your Valentine’s Day festivities, you should still talk in person or at least on the phone because just a post is not enough.  Pro Tip: Pair this option with the one above for a public serenade via social media.  After all, both apps allow posting to Instagram.  So romantic.
  3. Make a Playlist:  Nothing caters to the emotions like music.  Whether it be on iTunes or Spotify, put together a mix of your favorite songs and theirs to create a playlist of “Songs for their name here.”  Of course, you can get crazy with the playlist name.  Maybe start it off with the song you first danced to?  There’s an art to playlist-making but no matter what, you’ll be sure to have a rockin’ Valentine’s Day filled with jams that express how you really feel.

At the end of the day, spending time together with the one you love is the most important of all — and that’s free.  This Valentine’s Day, try quieting the cash and letting your heart speak.
