PROMISING: Led through strong leadership, the Art Club paints its way towards an  encouraging future.

With the beginning of the school year, a variety of clubs have been opened on the Poly campus. The Art Club is one of these exceptional clubs, and with the implementation of their new president Melody Romero (12), as well as teacher supervisor Mr. Bocanegra, their future is looking brighter than ever!

Melody Romero was officially appointed the position of president amid her mural painting project at the end of last school year. This mural project spanned over a large part of the 100s hallway, much of it being painted by Romero herself. The former president of the Art Club, knowing her artistic dedication and effort very well, knew that the future of the Art Club would be safe under Romero. “One day, [the former president just] came up to me and asked [me] if I wanted to be president next year,” she explains. After that, the rest was history—her responsibilities of leadership had been established for the next school year.

So far, Romero has spent most of her time as president advocating for the publicity of the club. From “recruiting people” to “organizing for homecoming,” she has stayed extremely busy. Though this approach may be different from years past, she does not seem to have any doubts. “I feel like I am doing something I enjoy every day,” she explains happily. Her ultimate goal, other than “to make the club big and have a lot of people join,” is to participate in the Art Walk downtown. “We want to go downtown and sell things that help fund the club,” Romero adds. Although this would take a lot of organization and effort, Romero strongly believes that this dream will one day come true.

The next important contributor to Art Club’s success this year is the club’s teacher supervisor, Mr. Bocanegra. With one year of supervising experience thus far, Mr. Bocanegra has become more and more confident about the club’s contributions to community needs. His biggest emphasis this year is on “establishing a group of students that know what they want to do.” While he loves to help directly support the club, Mr. Bocanegra believes it is equally as important for him to “have the students mainly keep the club going” with their own “aspirations and goals.” His favorite part about being a supervisor is “the community that the club builds up.” He enjoys seeing students that he hadn’t seen in years come together as part of the club, especially when they come together to work toward a common goal.

Regardless of skill level, the Art Club is a great place to hang out and enjoy art. As Romero puts it, “You can learn about yourself and other people through art.” Combined with dedicated individuals behind the scenes, the Art Club can provide a great overall learning experience—if you are looking for something new and exciting to try out, consider paying a visit!
