The Quin twins have done it again. Heartthrob, Tegan and Sara’s seventh studio album, won the hearts of fans everywhere and may have even captured a few new ones. While the album’s sound strays from what T&S followers are used to, its ’80s beats give it a euphoric, synth-pop feel. Though the previous albums were unique, Heartthrob definitely breaks the mold.

Unlike the sound, the subject matter remains consistent with the other records: love and heartbreak. With tracks titled “How Come You Don’t Want Me” and “Now I’m All Messed Up,” it is easy to empathize with the Canadian singers, though the poppy tunes make it difficult to hear the negativity. The tracks are both fun to dance to and, if you listen close enough, to sulk to.

The single “Closer” gave listeners a taste of the new direction and hooked most, but let’s face it: it’s hard to dislike the rock-turned-pop duo. The fan base for the Quin sisters might be the most loyal out there. If the two were to put out a rap album, fans might be shocked but would still pre-order the deluxe iTunes edition along with a signed hard copy.

Impressively, Heartthrob ranked number two on the iTunes charts (number one going to Justin Bieber’s acoustic nonsense). With such a great album, it’s no surprise Tegan and Sara will perform at Coachella this year.  While some say change is bad, those few obviously have not listened to Heartthrob.
