LEADERS: Riverside Poly High School hosts the annual leadership exchange for groups on Riverside Unified High Schools Campuses.
On November 7th 2023, Poly’s Associated Student Body hosted over 500 students from Ramona, King, North, Poly, Riverside Virtual School, Arlington, and STEM. The conference aimed to allow different leadership groups to council and share ideas and connect. The Super Bowl themed event featured a dance from each school, presentation from each school, and tables where students rotated to participate in discussions.
Before the conference, lots of work was done to prepare for such a big event. Our Associated Student Body worked to choose a speaker, create decorations, and even made a button for each student that would be attending. Poly ASB Director, Vanessa Douty explained that “this is a huge event for the school year, and it’s so much fun that it’s our turn to host”. The event rotates between the schools, and Poly voted on the theme which meant decor included football goal post balloon arrangements, trophies, footballs, and all things Super Bowl.
As the schools arrived, they were greeted by students cheering and huge heads with their schools halftime performers. Upon entering, they ate donuts and juice for breakfast while catching up with old friends. Next, speaker Johan Khalilian discussed the importance of leadership and serving others. We were able to hear from each school as they presented about different events they like. This aimed to understand ideas other schools have and improve our own programs.
Finally, it was time for everyone’s favorite part. Each school would perform a halftime dance for enjoyment for all. We listened to Bruno Mars, Katy Perry, Rihanna, Blacked Eyed Peas, The Weekend, and even Snoop Dogg. As schools danced, the audience cheered and appreciated all the costumes and choreography. Arlington ASB President, Samantha DeNava described this as “the best theme we’ve had in years” and knew it would be “hard to top.”
Next, the schools attended breakout tables which focused on a specific topic to discuss. With a mix of students from different schools, they reflected on their experiences and fostered ideas. After that, they ate lunch and ended with a great dance party.
Overall, the day was a great success with excellent feedback from all. We had the opportunity to share ideas and were encouraged to continue being the best versions of ourselves. One student shared that “it was such a fun experience getting to interact with all.” Events like these encourage us all to become the best versions of ourselves, and recommit to leadership on campus.
