OUTRAGE: The Juniors beat the Seniors for the first time…perhaps ever?|?
Emotions were running high during this past weekend’s Homecoming football game after the results were finally announced, crowning the Juniors this year’s float-building competition victors.
As the twenty-fifth of September came around, the Senior class was excited to get started. Every day of Homecoming week, dozens of sleep-deprived seniors headed to float building from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Despite the senioritis, they came ready to work, some folding for hours, while others’ fingers were shredded from the neverending separation of tissue papers in the fluffing process.

The 18-foot long, 14-foot high float, was based on the theme Bears on Film: Action! The senior float depicts a bear in a car with an explosion in the background as it narrowly escapes capture from robbing a bank. Alongside it, there is a superbear ready to save its city and defeat the bad guys. With this being the largest float of any class, the seniors had their work cut out for them. ASB President, Izzy Yrungaray (12), admitted that “this was the hardest year so far, and there were many stressful moments, but in the end, the collaboration from every kid that helped out allowed us to get it done”. Every year, Poly’s ASB puts in hours of service, getting there early, leaving extra late, helping to clean up, and organizing the food and snacks, making sure everything runs smoothly and ensuring a successful year. Without them, truly nothing could get done, so a huge shout out and thank you to our wonderful ASB.

Float building is not only an incredibly fun event that is unique to Poly, but it is also a great place to socialize and come together as a class, united in the hours of sacrifice, making memories, and plenty of new friends along the way. One of the football captains, J’Shaun Thomas (12), commented on the food this year, stating that “it just got better and better each night,” and most kids agreed, some even confessing that it was their main motivation for returning each night.

Although the seniors did not win the competition this year (due to Poly’s Staff having a momentary lapse in judgment – or at least in this senior’s opinion), every student who gave their best efforts felt pride, connecting forever in partnership. Class of 2024 is signing off, not in defeat, but in a passing of the torch to our lower classes, showing them true humility, class, and grace.
