GARDENING: Dedicated Poly club is ready to make Poly a better community.

Art club, Eco club, Fashion club—you name it! Here at Riverside Polytechnic High School, you can find any sort of club imaginable. Some clubs have been around for longer, even before the pandemic, while others were only just recently started. One important club that was created after the pandemic is the Gardening club. The Gardening club, as the name suggests, focuses on gardening. To understand a bit more about this club, I interviewed a few of the founders of the club and asked some questions about what they are hoping to get done this Poly school year.

Jocelyn Gonzalez (12) is a devoted president who founded the club in mid-2022. Gonzalez appears to be quite the passionate and educated person about gardening, clearly, enough to create a club revolving around it. When I asked Gonzalez what the gardening club had been focusing on the past few school months, she answered that “the club was working on a few gardening projects… [one involving] planting mushrooms.” Although they are currently working indoors, Gonzalez has aspirations to get a plan approved that would be the kick-start to an “outdoor garden.” A Poly garden on the campus, run by no one other than its students— how cool does that sound?

Not only does the club president play an important role in this club, but also does its treasurer. James Navarre (12) takes the job of the gardening club treasurer.  A treasurer is quite vital to a club’s success– for they must efficiently manage the club’s finances. As treasurer, Navarre hopes to “look into chipotle fundraising” this year (which I am sure sounds quite familiar to many people participating in extracurriculars on the Poly campus) to produce a larger budget for gardening club funds. So, be sure to keep your eyes peeled for any future notices about the club’s fundraising.

As seen through a few of the club members’ perspectives, there are great ambitions for the growing gardening community on the Poly campus. If you are hoping to look for more information on this club, or are maybe interested in joining, follow @rivpolygarden on Instagram to see the latest news or meetings. Best of luck to this gardening club’s future, and I, as another Poly student, truly hope to see it flourish!
