Buried deep underground, fed by the sun and nurtured by the Earth, the roots of humanity grow. Branching off, getting longer, but it’s core is never changing. In ancient times, children were told, “Do as I do. Do as I say.” Today we are told: “Follow your own path, as long as it’s right next to mine.” See, things on a fundamental level don’t change; the times and expectations may be different, but the message is the same: “listen to me to a fault.” But what we have to find is a balance between the ground and sky. Soar too low and our wings will be clipped, but soar too high and they burn.
It can be very tempting to play it safe, be exactly who you’re told to be. No more and no less. Exactly what they deemed right for you, but not you. Choosing to become a whisper, caught up in someone else’s dream. Living the life of a shadow, when each of us are meant to be flames. Stray too far and the Earth has a way of calling you home.
Your wings are wax and feathers, and you chose to soar ever higher. But ideas and dreams aren’t always as they appear to be. Their path is not linear, and neither is yours. Choosing to fly higher and higher without touching your feet to the ground only leads you further from whatever you’re searching for. The truth is not meant to be sought by you, but rather felt. It is the feeling of the wind rushing through your hair as you pursue who you are meant to be. It is the mud under your feet, squelching in their own language. It is the brush of a leaf as you pass it by.
It is the melting of your wings, as you flew too high.
