PROTECTION: In response to numerous accounts of illegal activity in Riverside parks, city officials may hire armed guards to patrol parks.

Councilman Steve Adams announced the proposal to hire armed guards on January 29. The city plans to discuss and vote on the proposal after hearing offers from private security firms.
Many residents complain about the vagrants sleeping in their local park, but according to Councilman Adams, the larger problems are drug dealing, aggressive panhandling and other crimes. “Everyone is welcome in our parks,” Adams said. “No one is welcome to conduct illegal activity in our parks.
This measure is also taken in response to several shootings that have occurred in Riverside parks. In December, a homeless man
was shot to death in La Sierra Park. That same month, a police officer was fired at while attempting to make an arrest in Arlington Park.
Public response to the proposal has been mixed; many residents close to the parks appear to be in favor. Abel Lopez, who lives across the street from La Sierra Park, believes that the presence of an armed guard “isn’t going to be as positive as a police officer, but it’s still going to be positive.”
Others are less sure. “It’s sort of like Big Brother,” Sam O’Neill (11) said. “It’s a little weird to have armed guards walking around a park.”
The city’s eventual goal is to hire more police officers, but this could take upwards of a year. Adams said that police officers are regularly assigned beats around parks, but often receive higher-priority calls.
Assistant City Manager Belinda Graham said that officials can begin answering questions once the city gets a response from private security companies. According to Graham, “we just really want to make sure that people understand our 58 parks at the city are safe, and they can take their family there and enjoy it.”
