TRANSITION: Poly moves to a completely online application process for Advanced Placement testing to improve organization and accountability.
By Matt Kaye, Staff Writer
As the school year moves past the halfway point, teachers and students prepare for another testing season. The second semester brings students and teachers face-to-face with not only difficult material, but also the most important tests of the year.
Students study and work harder to prepare as much as possible while teachers continue to lead their students to higher levels. Everyone is bracing for the California High School Exit Exam, new Common Core tests and Advanced Placement (AP) exams that will take place in a few months. Poly, accompanied by high schools across the state, will see extensive changes to state testing. While the format of the tests will be altered, these changes extend beyond the test structure. For the first time at Poly, registration for AP tests will take place online.
The jump to an online platform adds much more than just a shift in venue. The online platform simplifies the application process and allows administrators and students to worry less about signing
up and more about the actual tests themselves. The online system also brings better organization, more accuracy and overall cost reduction while ensuring that the right students receive the right tests.
TotalRegistration.net hosts this online system of test registration and has helped many schools in the nation simplify the application process for AP and Preliminary SAT tests. However, this movement from a handwritten system to a digital system progresses slowly. Only 39 schools in California and about five hundred in the nation offer this platform of registration for AP testing. Poly is among the schools that continue to make investments in technology both in the classroom and for school administration.
The new registration system offers many advantages for school administrators who handle the test registration process. The system brings all of a student’s information into one master database that organizes data. The website collects student grade levels and specific test selections and handles all payments for AP exams. The system performs most of the clerical work that would otherwise occupy hours of manual handling. With all of the information stored in one place, reports and lists can easily be created to assist with the normal registration process, which can reduce errors and significantly speed the process.
As part of the move to a more technologically-integrated school system, Poly continues to adopt new ways of creating more accessible educational opportunities. The new AP test registration is one of many transitions that keeps Poly extraordinary.
