QUESTIONABLE: Disney Channel celebrities had a chokehold on every tween’s fashion sense in the 2000s.
Without a doubt, fashion icons like Hannah Montana and Lizzie Mcguire were the main inspiration for many preteens and little girls. The real question is how do you even acquire such a status? The star of any basic Disney Channel outfit is skinny, low-waisted jeans and a lot of layering patterned shirts that have no right going together. The main goal of any outfit on this program is to literally put the boldest items together and pretend like you aren’t going to pre-calc at 8 in the morning.
Layering and adding unnecessary accessories is the key component in getting to dress like these characters. Need to spice up an outfit as if you aren’t wearing zebra print and neon pink together? Add a sequin scarf and a flashy fedora because you definitely need it. Now, what would be an appropriate option for footwear you may ask? A nice little strappy heel or a pair of rugged cowboy boots may implement the statement you’re looking for. But if you’re feeling really wild, feel free to wear a Doc Marten-like boot, but instead of going for a neutral color, try and aim for the most fluorescent, eye-blinding, neon you can find. All of these suggestions are for a casual day, so nothing too fancy. But when the need for a formal outfit comes up, you are still left with many pieces of inspiration. A classy cocktail dress is always the way to go, but to really give that Disney Channel flare, add a pair of converse and the bulkiest, brightest jewelry you can find. The cheaper looking, the better. It only does you good if it looks like it came straight out of Party City.
Whoever was head of the Disney Channel fashion department definitely needed to be fired, but somehow managed to have an impression on our everyday clothing. In all honesty, everyone looking back on this time period can probably mutually agree that there is barely anything tolerable going on in the fashion world. So please, with all the heartfelt advice given from yours truly, don’t take any of it for your own sake.
